I was walking along 28th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues in Chelsea (Manhattan) recently, and noticed this basketball court covered with a fantastic array of colors and shapes:

Robert Otto Epstein basketball court

It’s an art work created by Robert Otto Eptstein, titled “5b9k3q@^tg6!+2FFacebook Analog Research Laboratory, which has a mission of creating “inspiring and thought-provoking projects about the world and our place in it,” with a belief that “design and printmaking is a path to clarity and truth.”

But what about the artist, you might ask? Robert Otto Epstein is an artist who studied philosophy and political science at the University of Pittsburgh and law at the University of Durham in the UK. It’s not a typical path for an artist to take, but an interesting one … and as I’m looking at his website, I realize I’ve seen his work before, at the Fountain Art Fair in 2013, and also at The Volta Art Fair in 2017, where I saw these portraits of NBA players, Carmelo Anthony (left) and John Wall (right). I love these paintings!
