A mystery Ukrainian art collector bought art with thousands in cold, hard cash at the Context art fair this week in Miami.
A spy told us that the mystery man took out a suitcase filled with $100 bills and purchased $45,000 worth of artist WhIsBe’s “Vandal Gummy” sculptures in every color. The works were on sale for $5,000 each, and depict large gummy bears holding letter boards commonly used in police mug shots. (They were special editions of the one the artist sells on his Web site for up to $2,500.)
After the boffo sale in Miami, WhIsBe celebrated with a private dinner alongside chef Daniel Boulud at Boulud Sud. He was also hosting a closing bash at the Shore Club on Saturday night with DJ Irie. The 31-year-old Brooklyn artist’s name stands for “What Is Beauty?”
A 15-foot version of his signature “Vandal Gummy” sculpture was erected at Burning Man last year.
