MACOMB — A sculpture of Abraham Lincoln will be permanently erected on the lawn at Macomb City Hall.
The Macomb Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is collaborating with Duke Oursler, a Western Illinois University assistant professor of art, in designing a sculpture to commemorate Lincoln’s connection to the city. The cast stone and steel sculpture will be about 15 feet high and 8 feet wide.
The 16th president’s beard will consist of flowers and greenery.
“This unusual and creative design element will reflect Lincoln’s change from the clean-shaven Senate candidate who was photographed in Macomb to the bearded president who saved the Union, MACVB Executive Director Jock Hedblade said. “That is an important part of our local Lincoln story that many here have never known.”
The project will be coordinated with Macomb Centennial Rotary Club’s 100th anniversary on April 18. The Rotary Club will donate the funds for the project through grants, Rotary reserves and donations.
The projected cost of the sculpture is $32,000.
