I was in NYC the other day, and found myself walking down 8th Avenue through Times Square on my way back to Penn Station. I noticed this contradictory visual message in front of a gift shop on 8th Avenue: there was a mini-version of the Statue of Liberty, and as I looked up near the torch, I noticed the security camera attached to the wall. So, on the one hand, we have the torch, which, according to the National Park Service website, is a symbol of enlightenment. The site goes on to mention that “The Statue of Liberty’s torch lights the way to freedom showing us the path to Liberty.” Yet how much liberty do we have if we’re being monitored and recorded as we go about our daily activities? Trust me, I understand the need to keep New York safe from terrorists and store owners want to keep an eye on their businesses to monitor for theft, and so forth … I just thought it was an interesting contradiction of visual messages side-by-side.
