Everyone likes having a go at DCI Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon), especially wife and daughter, but no one in the village is quite as handy with the condescending put-downs as forensic pathologist, Fleur Perkins (Annette Badland), whose favourite joke is that she is fortified by embalming fluid. With voice work by Miriam Margolyes, Rob Brydon, Tom Hiddleston and Richard Ayoade, Nick Park and Aardman’s 2018 claymation is among the Wallace and Gromit creators’ best work. It might be set at the dawn of time – its protagonist, Dug (Eddie Redmayne), is a forward-thinking caveman – but this is a story about soccer. The essence of the beautiful game shines through an uplifting plot with lots of laughs.

Thursday from 2pm, Movies Action

Christmas left you wanting to blow something up? All sorts of odd movies have become Christmas classics but few are as unlikely festive fair as these Bruce Willis shoot-em-ups that – like their hero – simply refuse to die. From the 1988 original to 2013’s rather elegiac offering, the Die Hard movies certainly celebrate mayhem. But they are also always – in their own bloody, wisecracking way – about the triumph of good over evil and the redemptive power of love. Merry Christmas. MH
