The Loop Nye
Tuesday, 9.30pm, 10 Peach
TV besties Liv Phyland and comedian Tanya Hennessy host a very poppy countdown to the new decade with this special episode of Ten’s music video show. Phyland promises to “wear shoes” and Hennessey to “shave her legs” for the occasion. Expect a playlist of dance floor hits increasing in intensity towards midnight. No doubt the pair will also find time to plug their worthy mental health school workshops, Girls Who Glow.
Back Roads Summer
Monday, 8pm, ABC
The star of this spotlight on the outback Queensland town of Thargomindah is young country and western singer Jacinta Byrne, winner of the “Showdown” at the Royal Queensland Show (fondly known as the “Ekka”, short for “Exhibition”). She’s a vibrant ambassador for her tiny community, where the local pastimes are dirt-bike riding, polo cross, and the assigning of nicknames such as “Dogga”, “Fridgie” and “Mistake”.
Spongebob Squarepants the Musical
Sunday, 8.30pm, Nickelodeon
Transforming a cartoon into a Broadway show – a cartoon that has exactly zero human characters – is a big ask. But somehow Tina Landau and Kyle Jarrow managed to pull it off, largely by capturing the essence of our favourite Spongebob characters, rather than their physical manifestation. (Although there are some cool physical sleights-of-hand, too.) Bright, bouncy, full of fun slapstick and not afraid to break the fourth wall, this is great family entertainment. MH
