Melbourne’s Gold FM has made radio ratings history, claiming 1.1 million listeners for the first time.

The classic-hits station also recorded an overall audience share of 12.5 per cent of Melbourne’s radio market – its best share in more than 15 years. (Audience share, which reflects both the number of listeners and the time they spend listening, is considered the ultimate benchmark of performance.)

Gold’s Christian O’Connell also claimed the number one FM breakfast spot among a traditionally competitive field. The British radio host is second overall only to 3AW’s Ross Stevenson and John Burns, who broadcast on the AM band. The 3AW hosts have a massive audience share of 20.6 per cent, up from last survey’s 17.3. This survey corresponded with the AFL finals season, which has historically lifted 3AW’s ratings.

Australian Radio Network’s content director, Duncan Campbell, said he was “very happy” with Gold’s ratings.
