The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey’s Members Committee presents,
internationally acclaimed artist, Serena Bocchino’s upcoming exhibition, COLORFORMS. New paintings and sculptures by Bocchino will be included in the COLORFORMS exhibition which will be on view from November 16, 2019, through January 26, 2020. Bocchino will be present at the opening reception, taking place on Saturday, November 16th from 2 – 4 PM.

COLORFORMS explores composition and color. The paintings and sculptures included in this exhibit incorporate concepts of drawing depicting forms through both two and three-dimensional compositions. Bocchino utilizes a unique and strategic use of line that generates an ethereal space that directs the eye in and out of each area and shape. Bocchino has been called a colorist for her unique palette and fine use of tonal values. Each of Bocchino’s canvases and sculptures acts as an investigation of Chromatic Space.

For more than twenty-five years, Bocchino has focused on color and composition in two ways: utilizing a reduced or heavily modulated color schema and by juxtaposing contrasting abstract elements to activate each work. She creates a distinct range of movement with spatial areas of form, color, and lyrical mark-making that produces a universal language.

In 2015, the first monograph delving into Bocchino’s work was published: ‘Serena Bocchino the Artist’, featuring over 140 full-color illustrations. Bocchino’s monograph includes an Introduction by Kathleen Goncharov, Senior Curator at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, with essays by Art Historian, Lisa A. Banner, and Art Writer, Jonathan Goodman and was edited by Curator and Chinese Art Specialist, Lily Zhang Candler.

Bocchino’s studio practice has been the subject of six films. Additionally, a docu-style film centered on Bocchino’s methodology is currently in production, due to be released in 2020. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts has awarded Serena Bocchino fellowships in both Painting and Drawing. During the Summer/Fall of 2019, Bocchino was commissioned to create four public art installations to display at Newark Pennsylvania Station by NJ Transit and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. These exterior and interior public art installations will be on view through February 2020.

Serena Bocchino’s work is represented in many public art collections, including the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Newark Museum, Trenton State Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, The St. Louis Art Museum, the Springfield Museum of Art, the Zimmerli Art Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, the Jersey City Museum, the Art in Embassies Program in Washington D.C, the Taoxichuan Art Museum of CAFA, Jingdezhen, China and recently the National Museum of Poland, Gdansk.
