A statue of Moondyne Joe taken from its artist’s home in Hamilton Hill on Monday afternoon has been handed back after the people who took it saw a news broadcast calling for its return.

Artist Len Zuks pleaded with ‘thieves’ to give back his sculpture of Moondyne Joe which was taken from his property this week.

The steel sculpture, which cost $10,000 to create and weighs 400kg, was named after the famous WA bush ranger.

Mr Zuks said he planned to show the sculpture at an exhibition on Bathers Beach in February.

“Maybe they took it because they thought it was bronze and they’d get a lot of money for the scrap bronze, but this is scrap steel made to look bronze,” he said.

7NEWS reported the men who took the sculpture said they believed it was left at the front of the home because it was awaiting collection.
