Seven will be hoping some of Kruger’s audience will drift over with her. This year Australia’s Got Talent’s series average audience was 806,000 viewers in the metropolitan market. The Voice averaged over one million viewers.

Seven’s newly minted managing director James Warburton said Kruger’s popularity with a younger demographic helped make the decision to lure her across.

“She relates across age demographics in that family environment so she sits in the sweet spot for programs like Mega Mini-Golf and Australia’s Got Talent: The Contenders,” he said.

“She is a good fit for a whole range of our programs, she is quick witted and fantastic at relating to people.”

While Kruger’s main role at Nine was presenting Today Extra, Warburton confirmed there were no current plans to have her replace anyone on Seven’s current line-up on Sunrise and The Morning Show, however changes in the future have not been ruled out.

“Depending on the overall slate, you would never rule (using her on Sunrise or The Morning Show) out,” he said.

“But it is going to be a significant workload on those two shows and in terms of Big Brother, we haven’t creatively made the decision on who will host, but we are in those discussions with Endemol Shine now.

“But we have unequivocally signed her for prime-time shows.”

Kruger will also play a role in Seven’s coverage of next year’s Olympics in Tokyo

Warburton, who only joined Seven in August to replace former CEO Tim Worner, has been busily luring talent from other networks to fill the broadcaster’s line-up as he attempts to stem the loss of viewers. A number of shows have failed to resonate with viewers and it is likely they will come in second behind Nine, publisher of this masthead, in the overall ratings this year.

In October it was revealed that former MasterChef judges Matt Preston and Garry Mehigan would host a new cooking show for Seven, now Warburton has snapped Kruger up from Nine and he said there may be others including for the reboot of Farmer Wants A Wife.

“There’s a lot of people wanting to talk to us,” he said.

Kruger remains on contract with Nine until the end of this year and will be unable to fulfil any commitments with Seven until the start of 2020.
