With the hashtag #toostrongforyoukaren trending last month in response to artist Robby Wirramanda Knight’s viral video of racist comments he received, McGrath feels Black Cockatoo is a relevant reminder of Indigenous fortitude. “See how it was back then and how we were really treated and we still stand strong.”

McGrath has been lighting up screens big and small with appearances in Glitch, Mystery Road, The Code and the title role in the 2017 film adaptation of Jasper Jones. Black Cockatoo marks the 23-year-old actor’s first theatre role and it was a part he felt he couldn’t turn down.

“I’m very stage shy, nervous and that,” says McGrath. “But I felt like this is the perfect opportunity to step out of that comfort zone and challenge myself. I read the script and fell in love. The story needs to be told.”
