Apple’s “best of” podcast selection for 2019 featured many familiar names, but in amongst them was an independent comedy podcast from Melbourne, charmingly titled We Fact Up. The show is a clever spin on the popular trivia podcast format, with hosts Dave Zwolenski, Redd Peterson and James ‘Martine’ Blake trying to answer the most trivial of questions without the help of Google.
“It’s a classic ‘two mates at a pub’ story,” explains Zwolenski, on the origin of the podcast. “We were at the pub, and we were asking some very interesting, insightful questions, like who invented the high five? And someone brought out their phone and started answering the questions. And we [said] why are you ruining this conversation with answers? We want to ruin this conversation by not having answers.
“And we thought, wouldn’t it be fun to do a podcast where you actively can’t Google anything? Because these days, phones are so prolific, everyone’s conversations are being ruined. What if we had a show where we’re anti-phone, no Googling allowed?”
Blake says the team “were all pretty shocked, to be honest,” when they heard the podcast was honoured by Apple.
