Here’s something that caught my attention when I attended the 14C Art Fair in Jersey City back in February: the painting below left is titled “King, After Van Eyck,” by Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern. It’s an update on the 15th Century Dutch artist Jan Van Eyck’s 1433 painting titled “Portrait of a Man (Self Portrait?),” below right. Ficarelli-Halpern’s subject has a nose ring and a gold necklace and poses in front of an abstract art background. I like how she has flipped the pose and given him a new, stylish coat.

Contemporary homage to Jan Van Eyck Self Portrait

Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern is an artist and educator who lives and works in New Jersey. She received her BFA in surface design from Parsons the New School of Design, and earned her MFA in painting from New Jersey City University. You can see and learn more about her work at her website here.

We seem to be encountering more of Van Eyck’s work recently … we were checking out his wooden clogs just the other day.
