Dan Gable is known for saying, “Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”
But once you’ve seen the Iowa wrestling icon memorialized in 3,000 pounds of Wisconsin cheese, life is much more than easy. It’s downright glorious.
A cheese carving extravaganza will take place at Hy-Vee at 410 N. Ankeny Blvd. in Ankeny from Nov. 14-17, featuring Sarah the Cheese Lady, ACS Certified Cheese Professional, Tyler Coenen and, of course, Gable.
Hy-Vee will be hosting Sarah Kaufmann — a.k.a., Sarah the Cheese Lady — to carve a sculpture of Gable from a 3,000-pound wheel of Henning’s aged white cheddar cheese and then sampling and selling the wheel throughout the weekend.
Gable will also be visiting Hy-Vee on Sunday for a meet and greet.
Here’s the schedule:
- Thursday: Holiday Showcase, 5-7:30 p.m.
- Friday: Cheese festivities start at 10 a.m.
- Saturday: Cheese festivities start at 10 a.m.
- Sunday: Meet and greet with Dan Gable, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
For every pound of cheese sold from the 3,000-pound wheel of cheese, Hy-Vee will donate a dollar to the Dan Gable National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Waterloo.
And be sure to try your hand at finding the “Golden Curd” to win a free Raygun shirt autographed by Dan Gable and a free pound of cheese.
